Skvernelis is valued as an officer with extensive experience in the interior affairs system and the nation’s trust, the President’s Office said in a press release.

The police chief was proposed to head the Interior Ministry by Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius after the candidate was presented by the Order and Justice party’s leader, Rolandas Paksas.

Former minister of the interior, Dailis Alfonsas Barakauskas, resigned last week, soon after law enforcement revealed it was looking into suspected corruption in the ministry’s public procurement contracts.
