Under the Constitution of Lithuania, the prosecutor general is appointed for a five-year term by the president upon the approval of the Seimas.
The position of prosecutor general has been vacant since mid July when the term of Darius Valys expired.
President Dalia Grybauskaitė initially proposed Nerijus Meilutis, chairman of Kaunas Regional Court, for the office but he was also voted down by the Seimas.
Deputy Prosecutor General Darius Raulušaitis is currently acting as prosecutor general.

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė on Tuesday slammed the country’s parliament after it rejected her second candidate for prosecutor general, accusing lawmakers of irresponsibility ahead of the upcoming general elections.
“The prosecution service has fallen victim to pre-election politicizing. It’s an irresponsible attitude to the country’s justice system, which is undermining people’s trust in the prosecution service,” the president told BNS via her press service.
