Recent spring temperatures will be replaced by sub-zero temperatures, sleet and snow.
“There will certainly be no spring warmth, with this weekend the temperature dropping, but it will be just a piece of cake compared to what awaits us next week. Around March 22-23 the country will be hit by a blast of cold weather. According to the current forecast, temperatures in Vilnius, Kaunas, and Druskininkai will drops to -10 degrees Celsius,” said weather forecaster Kęstutis Petkevičius.
According to climatologist Justinas Kilpys, Lithuania’s spring usually starts on the Baltic coast, in Klaipėda, in the west in the first week of March and spring comes last to the north-east of Lithuania, Ignalina, and this usually happens after March 20.
“So we can say that for spring to travel from Klaipėda to Ignalina takes about three weeks,” said the climatologist.
Surprisingly, temperatures in March have been slightly above average for this time of year with the monthly average temperature of Lithuania reaching one degree Celsius rather than hovering around zero as is the norm.
But the rest of March could be more like winter than spring, with plenty of opportunity for more snow before the winter finally retreats.
