The halfway house is intended to facilitate reintegration of former inmates, housing motivated prisoners of impeccable record, the Prisons Department said.

The halfway house in Alytus will accommodate up to 20 well-behaved men sentenced for minor offences who have about six months of their sentence left. They will be allowed to leave the premises and have family visits on weekends.

The Ministry of Justice says it hopes that similar institutions could be launched in Vilnius, Marijampolė and Pravieniškės later this spring.

Some 6,500 people currently serve sentences in Lithuania. The state has been seeking to reduce the number of people in prisons.
