The candles spelled out the number ’60,’ which is the number of minutes for which those observing the hour had to go without using electricity. In cities and towns across Lithuania, people met the celebration in different ways, but all of them involved turning out the lights.
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and has since been spread by the World Wildlife Fund to the rest of the world.
