“According to preliminary calculations, the losses stand at about 40 million euros today. The losses different, depending on districts – from 1 to 7 million euros in the Panevėžys district where nearly 30,000 hectares were flooded because of rain,” Markauskas told the national radio LRT on Thursday.

In his words, an emergency situation should be announced next week across the country to give access to the state reserve funds.

Later this week, the Agriculture Ministry intends to turn to the European Commission for support to farmers. Nevertheless, Markauskas admitted that the chances of securing European support were slim, as losses had been incurred by farmers across Europe.

Emergency situation due to damages caused by heavy rainfall has been announced in nine of Lithuania’s 60 municipalities.
