Lithuania’s16 February Celebration in Washington USA

Lithuanians of the US Capital region celebrated on Sunday, 15 February, the 97th anniversary of Lithuania as the modern day State, on one of the most blistery, cold days in recent memory. The day’s celebration started with a Latin mass in St. Matthews Cathedral. Monsignor Rolandas Makrickas of the Apostolic Nunciature to the United States welcomed the congregation the historic downtown cathedral. At the end of the service, Deanne Howes sang the Lithuanian national anthem, joined by well over 150 Lithuanians. The attendees walked the short distance on icy sidewalks to a nearby hotel for a breakfast. Washington Lithuanian Community leader, Danelė Vidutienė, introduced Žygimantas Pavilionis, Lithuania’s Ambassador to the United States. International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Washington

On Tuesday, an International Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony took place in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC. The International Holocaust Remembrance Day coincided this year with the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. On Tuesday, 13 January, the Lithuanian community and a large number of American guests commemorated in Washington’s University Club the day in 1991 when the Soviet army attempted to overthrow Lithuania’s legitimate government in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Silent march in Washington to commemorate French terrorist attacks

Čiurlionis’ music revisited in Washington, DC

Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis had a short, yet very prolific life (he was just 35 when he died in 1911). He considered himself a synesthete, in that he perceived colours and music simultaneously. Čiurlionis composed about 400 pieces of music, mostly for the piano, and he also created 300 paintings – many with musical names. In addition, he wrote literary works and poems. An asteroid – 2420 Čiurlionis – was named after him. Few artists have left such deep influence on Lithuanian culture. […]
