Eurovision results are political – Lithuania’s Linkevičius

The winner of Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday was the Ukrainian performer Jamala with her song 1944 about Soviet deportations of Crimean Tatars. Russia, whose Sergei Lazarev came in third, has expressed outrage over “politicized” results.

“It is true that these competitions are politicized,” Lithuania’s Linkevičius agrees. “We would like to have sports or, in this case, music completely separated from politics, but that is impossible.”

“One can resent and be reproachful about it, but the Eurovision results clearly showed the world’s opinion and reaction not just to songs, but to global events as well,” Linkevičius continued on Žinių Radijas, congratulating Ukraine on the victory.
