“This is, for us, very symbolic: it means that Germany starts to understand its responsibility for European security,” Grybauskaitė told the Financial Times. “Sooner or later I think we cannot rely only on NATO and only on American participation in Europe.”
Next week, NATO countries’ leaders should confirm their plans to form international battalions in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland to deter Russia. The other three battalions will be led by the US, Canada and Britain.
