“The Polish-Lithuanian forum will today award people for their contribution to Lithuanian-Polish cooperation, and this year the laureates are President Adamkus and Venclova,” the forum’s chairman Alvydas Nikžentaitis told BNS on Thursday.

“The Lithuanian and Polish side choose their nominee independently. Professor Venclova is being awarded for his literary work that’s been of benefit for communication between the two nations, and Adamkus will receive the ward for his political activity that’s brought Lithuania and Poland together on the interstate level,” he said.

Both laureates are well-known in Poland. A number of Venclova’s books have been translated into Polish and his texts are often published by Polish magazines and newspapers, Nikžentaitis said.

Meanwhile, Adamkus’ presidency is considered “a golden age of Lithuanian-Polish relations,” Nikžentaitis said.

Adamkus was Lithuania’s president in 1998-2003 and 2004-2009.

Last year in Vilnius, the awards went to historian, essayist and journalist Adam Michnik and Professor Bogdan Szlachta of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.
