“We have proposed to honour the EU anthem just as we do our own and, as part of the unique economic and political community, remember the ideals of freedom, peace and solidarity and honour them with the universal language of music,” said Vilnius Mayor Artūras Zuokas. “The idealist vision of Ode to Joy, where the entire mankind becomes friends, is close to us, Lithuanians, as well as the people of Europe.”
Ode to Joy was picked as the EU anthem by the Council of Europe in 1972.
