Lithuanian Customs to focus on Belarusian border

“We plan to shift our attention to the border with Belarus. This is due to a dramatic fall in transport flows from one of our neighbors, the Kaliningrad region,” Vygantas Paigozinas, deputy director general of the Customs Department, told reporters on Wednesday after the Cabinet’s meeting that focused on the fight against the shadow economy.

“With tobacco products from Belarus prevailing in the illegal market, we think that more attention needs to be paid to that border, to regions bordering Belarus,” the official said.

The control of fuel being brought in fuel tanks from third countries, introduced in February 2014, will be continued this year, he said.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius told reporters after the meeting that the fight against the shadow economy improved last year. However, he emphasized the need for a further improvement in VAT collection.
