Lithuanian president to award rescuers of Jews

The Presidential Office told BNS that 41 Jew savers will get Life Saving Crosses posthumously.

Moreover, the names of the Holocaust victims will be read out in public laces in several Lithuanian cities and town for the occasion of the National Memorial Day for the Genocide Victims of the Lithuanian Jews.

A memorial ceremony will also take place at the Paneriai Memorial in Vilnius in the afternoon.

The National Memorial Day for the Genocide Victims of the Lithuanian Jews is commemorated in Lithuania on September 23 to mark the liquidation of the Vilnius Ghetto.

800 Lithuanians are recognized as Righteous Among the Nations for saving Jews.

During World War Two, the Nazis and their Lithuanian collaborators killed over 90 percent of Lithuania’s pre-war Jewish population of more than 200,000.
