“The bulk of city residents live in northwestern part of the city, and the biggest share of automobile traffic comes via this part. Naturally, the bypass will benefit all of the people,” Šimašius told journalists at the opening ceremony.
The Vilnius municipality has said the bypass would handle about 33,000 automobiles every day, which is about 2,500 per hour. The speed limit on the bypass will be 90 kmh, with the exception of the maximum of 70 kmh in some stretches.
Aldas Rusevičius, CEO of Kauno Tiltai (Kaunas Bridges), the largest transport infrastructure construction company in the Baltic countries and the general contractor of the third phase of the bypass, said that the bypass had been completed a few months ahead of schedule in an effort to avoid postponement of the final work for winter.
Built over a period of 18 months, the bypass connect highways Vilnius –Kaunas–Klaipėda and Vilnius–Panevėžys.
The bypass has been built by Kauno Tiltai in cooperation with companies Fegda, Lemminkainen Lietuva, Eurovia Lietuva, Tiltsta and Axis Power since July of 2015. A 5.4-km section of 4-6 traffic lanes was built, adding to the total length of the bypass of 12.6 km.
Some 84.06 million euros for the project was earmarked from the European Union’s funds, with 21 million euros provided by the municipality, which used the loan of 17 million euros in the Nordic Investment Bank received in 2014 and another loan of 27.6 million euros received from OP Corporate Bank secured earlier this year.
