Minister Linkevičius: Lithuania’s solidarity in refugee crisis shouldn’t be questioned

“Our solidarity should not be questioned, as it is unproductive. We have to think together of ways of solving the situation that has hit the whole of Europe,” the minister told the Žinių Radijas news radio on Wednesday.

In Linkevičius’ words, Lithuania’s commitment to accept 325 refugees from countries like Syria “is not some sacred number that cannot be changed”.

The diplomacy chief noted that Lithuania’s Christian churches had separate programmes to receive refugees from Iraq and Syria, in addition to the families from war-struck Eastern Ukraine hosted in Lithuania.

According to data provided by the International Organization for Migration, more than 350,000 migrants have reached Europe after crossing the Mediterranean Sea this year. 2,600 more perished during the dangerous journey.
