NATO jets scrambled twice last week over Russian warplanes

On Monday, the jets intercepted an IL-76 aircraft flying from mainland Russia to the Kaliningrad region in accordance to a pre-filed flight plan, its transponder on and in contact with flight controllers, the Lithuanian Defense Ministry said.

An IL-20 flying in the same direction was accompanied on Thursday – it was flying in accordance to a flight plan and maintained contact with flight controllers, however, had its automatic on board transponder switched off.

The NATO air-policing mission in the Baltic states is conducted from Lithuania and Estonia.
