“The exact number is hard to tell, but there might be about ten [recognizable names], mostly cultural figures,” the centre’s director Teresė Birutė Burauskaitė has told LRT. “I suspect that they were included into the [KGB] register for some reason. Maybe to compromise them or to make use of them, since they were people with some influence in the society.”
The Genocide and Resistance Research Centre has been investigating KGB archives in Lithuania and publishing lists of people who were recruited as agents of the Soviet security police. It is believed that over a thousand recruited agents operated in Lithuania between 1940 and 1990.
The names of Lithuanian KGB agents are accessible on kgbveikla.lt. The publicly accessible list currently contains 1,000 agents, most of them recruited during and immediately after World War Two.
This year, the centre is planning to release names of the agents who collaborated with the KGB in the 1960s and 1970s.
