Seimas to consider proposal to ban spreading info inciting terrorism

64 lawmakers on Friday gave their initial backing to the proposed amendments, and ten abstained. The bills will now go to parliamentary committees for further deliberation.

The proposed amendments would transfer into national law the provisions of an EU directive on fighting terrorism and would define measures aimed at fighting online contents publicly inciting terrorist crimes.

If such amendments come into force, the police will be able issue orders to hosting providers to voluntarily block such contents or remove it in two hours upon receipt of notification.

In case of failure to do so, the police will be able to issue an official order to hosting or network services providers to block contents for up to 72 hours.

In order to have such information removed or blocked of a longer period, the police will gave to turn to Vilnius Regional Administrative Court.
