“The parliament will definitely discuss it in detail and depth during the spring session,” Baškienė said on Tuesday in her presentation of the new parliament’s tasks for the rest of the fall session.

She assured the parliament that the government would find ways of persuading the European Commission about the need and circumstances of postponing the implementation of the social model, which envisages reforms of the labor market and the state-run social insurer Sodra.

“We feel responsible before the European Commission. I believe the new government will have enough significant argumentation to explain everything,” said Baškienė.

On Thursday, coalition partners will propose amendments, which stipulate postponing the enforcement of the new social model until mid-2017.

Lithuania has asked the European Commission to recognize the social model as structural reform and apply a reservation on related costs when calculating the 2017 deficit of public finances. The spending now stands at 243 million euros, which accounts for 0.6 percent of the projected gross domestic product (GDP).
