A new scheme for the services should be developed by October, the planned date of introduction of a new transport hub at the airport.
“We discussed ways of regulating taxi automobiles to make them cleaner and ensure that the taxi drivers are more honest and tidy. Therefore, we are accepting the city’s offer about setting a fixed tariff from the airport,” Masiulis told a news conference on Thursday.
In his words, the decision would increase the transparency of taxi services. The ministry intends to inquire the Competition Council whether a fixed tariff is legally possible.
Currently, people arriving at the airport, especially foreigners, are often ripped off, as they do not know the taxi prices.
On Thursday, Masiulis met with Šimašius and Gediminas Almantas, CEO of Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports), the state-run operator of the airports of Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga.
Šimašius said the regulation of prices would prevent abuse by taxi drivers.
“When it comes to the fixed price, to make it clear for everyone – let’s say 8-9 euros to the city center. A person walks out (of the airport), sees the information about the tariff to the city center and they know how much they should pay. This would leave no room for cheating,” the mayor told the news conference.
In his words, abuse by taxi drivers is one of the biggest transportation problems of the Lithuanian capital.
