“I think what President Trump said was a reiteration of the position, that clear line that the United States has been actually following,” Linkevicius told reporters.
The foreign minister underlined that Lithuania has no doubts about the US policy on protecting the Baltic region, but noted that Lithuania itself must contribute to collective defense.
When asked about a recent Russian naval exercise with China in the Baltic Sea and the Zapad 2017 large-scale military exercise to be held by Russia jointly with Belarus in September, Trump said at a White House news conference on Monday that he considers the Baltic region “a very, very important part of the world”.
“Well, we are very protective of that region,” he said. “That’s all I can say. We are very protective. We have great friends there.”
