Vilnius to mark 75-year anniversary of US non-recognition of Soviet occupation

The event at the Washington Square will be attended by Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaitė and Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius. A music concert is planned for the ceremony.

On July 23, 1940, US Secretary of State Sumner Welles published an official statement on US non-recognition of the Soviet annexation of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

The US continued the non-recognition policies throughout the 50 years of the Soviet rule, a Lithuanian embassy operated in Washington, D.C., over the years.
