She told the Lietuvos Žinios daily that the dual citizenship referendum idea, which has lately received support from Lithuanian leaders, would end in failure due to low voter turnout.
“If the voter turnout in presidential election is 52 percent, what can be expected from parliamentary elections? We think that simply adopting an amendment to the Citizenship Law would do a lot of good,” the daily cited Navickienė as saying.
She added that “a dozen thousand people” at most would take the opportunity to have the dual citizenship, if it is allowed.
Current legislation allows dual citizenship only in exceptional cases. According to a ruling by the Constitutional Court, widening the provision requires a national referendum which would be valid only if the motion is supported by over half of all registered voters.
