During the meeting, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Neris Germanas expressed regret over Milan Court of Appeal’s decision to discontinue the extradition case of Vasily Kotlerov.
Germanas underlined that Lithuania sent an extradition request to Italy in compliance with all requirements of international law and was ready to provide all necessary additional explanations and information on this case, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The Lithuanian vice-ministers also expressed concern over Italian institutions’ failure to ensure that the suspect stayed in the country during the hearing of his case. The Italian ambassador was asked to explain the circumstances of this case and the court ruling.
Kotlerov, a former Soviet officer from St. Petersburg, was detained at a Milan airport on 13 May under a European arrest warrant after arriving for a celebration of his 50th anniversary. After being put under house arrest, he went missing.
