Grybauskaitė says that she would consider proposing one more candidate to the current Seimas, provided that the agreed to hold an open vote. According to the president, the submission of the candidacy will also depend on consultations with parliamentary groups of the Seimas. Grybauskaitė earlier had said that she would suggest a new candidate only after the general elections in 2016.

“It is obvious that some MPs are trying to hide behind a secret vote and this speaks about non-transparency in voting,” the president told reporters on Monday.

The Seimas of Lithuania has already rejected two candidates proposed by Grybauskaitė.

Referring to recent proposals to transfer the right to appoint prosecutor general to the Government, the president says that such a move would be a step back in the law enforcement system.

“The current attempts to present such proposals means that we would return 15-20 years back in Lithuania’s law enforcement system and Lithuania’s democracy, when a single party was appointing their prosecutor general,” she thinks.
