Lithuanian police launch raids on illegal meat processing plants

DELFI / Kiril Čachovskij

Several hundred police officers and tax inspectors carried out the raids on Monday and Tuesday of this week. They said they discovered a network of poultry processing companies that had sold illegal produce worth €6.5 million, depriving the state coffers of €2 million in taxes.

“This was a well-organized group of individuals who would bring poultry illegally from abroad and take it to distribution points,” said Rolandas Kiškis, the chief of the Criminal Police.

Officers also discovered processing plants operating in unsanitary conditions. The produce would have been sold in supermarkets across the country.

Charges have been brought against 36 people, 10 have been detained. The operation involved 237 raids and counting, Kiškis said on Thursday.
