The fee-paying school, which is attended by the children of foreign diplomats and business people, last year applied to the capital’s local authority for a permit to add a mansard story to its building in Subačiaus Street, in the Old Town of Vilnius.
However, the building permit cannot be issued until the Culture Ministry adopts a decision on amending the regulation on the protection of the Old Town.
“To meet the growing needs of foreign diplomats and the business community, AISV seeks to obtain a permit to renovate the existing building to accommodate more students,” the school told BNS in a comment.
“In the past year, we have coordinated the matter with responsible state and municipal officials, but we have not yet received a final permit,” it said.
Vilnius’ local authority told BNS that the issuance of the permit has been delayed due to heritage protection requirements.
Algimantas Degutis, deputy director of the Lithuanian Cultural Heritage Department, confirmed to BNS that the department has forwarded material regarding the necessary changes to the regulation to the Culture Ministry.
The Culture Ministry said in a comment to BNS that it had received the documents for consideration.
“It is too early to make any conclusions or comments, since the documents submitted are being examined. The examination process should not take longer than provided for in legislation. The community will be immediately informed about the results,” it said.
