“There has not been a month (without such admissions), there are more cases in certain months and fewer in other months but I asked for statistics, and the cases on a sharp increase, I mean the violence that leads for the children to need medical attention,” Kevalas told the national television LRT on Sunday.
At the clinic, doctors last week failed to save a four-year-old boy who was severely battered in his home in Kėdainiai. The boy was admitted to the clinic without vital functions and died the next day.
Kevalas emphasized that the major problem was that the children who are treated after violence are sent back to the abusive environment.
He recalled a case when a child was sent home after treatment of beating and came back to hospital eight months later in a condition where he did not survive.
After the last week’s tragedy where the four-year-old died after being severely beaten by his father, the parliament is calling an extraordinary session in February to adopt changes to the Child’s Rights Protection Law that would ban punishing children with corporal punishments.
