Such a declaration has been registered by Mantas Adomėnas, an MP representing the opposition Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats, the party that Landsbergis used to lead.
The document cites the Provisional Basic Law of the Republic of Lithuania, which was in force after Lithuania restored its independence, stating that “the President of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania shall be the highest official representative of the Republic of Lithuania”.
The declaration also states that the Provisional Basic Law stipulated functions of the the president of the Supreme Council, which are usually performed by heads of state, stressing that Landsbergis “has always acted in the interest of the Republic of Lithuania and performed his duties worthily”.
The declaration calls for the acknowledgement of the fact that by serving as president of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania since 11 March 1990 until 11 November 1992, Landsbergis was in fact the country’s head of state.
