Rasa Svetikaitė, chief presidential advisor on legal affairs, said that Judicial Council’s ruling was “a principled and mature decision which five years ago would not have been possible”.
Judge Egidijus Laužikas, the chairman of the Judicial Council, said that that a special judicial commission has found out that the event at the businessman’s restaurant was organised by judge Žironas, while the remaining judges arrived to the event without knowing a precise venue and who the restaurant belonged to, also, they were not properly informed by Žironas about the dinner payment arrangements.
“It was established that none of the judges personally knew businessman Radvila and none of them was dealing with a case related to the businessman’s activities at that time. Three of the judges who took part in the event adjudicated in two cases related to the activities of the businessman’s companies: one ruling was favourable to him, while another one was unfavourable to the businessman. Both cases were examined 2-3 years ago,” said the chairman of the Judicial Council.
On Friday, the Judicial Council unanimously approved of the dismissal of Žironas from the post of the chairman of the Court of Appeals of Lithuania as his term of office has expired.
