In an interview with the Verso Žinios business daily, Education and Science Minister Audronė Pitrėnienė said that one of the options under consideration was providing an opportunity for school students to take more classes in the Lithuanian language.
“The ministry suggests shifting to a new teaching model when the teaching process is organized in an ethnic minority language and classes are instructed in that ethnic minority language, except several existing subjects taught in Lithuanian, and also providing an opportunity for children and their parents to take more subjects in Lithuanian. More subjects would be taught in Lithuanian. And another recommended model would involve the teaching process organized in the Lithuanian language and classes would take place in the Lithuanian and ethnic minority languages,” the minister said.
Currently, Lithuania’s ethnic minority schools, mostly Russian and Polish, instruct students in that language, except for certain subjects that include the Lithuanian language and literature, Lithuania’s history, geography, and civics.
