Energy Minister: LNG facility would compensate even unsuccessful talks with Gazprom

“Even if the talks [with Gazprom] are not too successful, we already have that way out,” Rokas Masiulis told the reporters after a meeting with President Dalia Grybauskaitė on Friday.

He would not explain, however, in which case the talks with Gazprom would be considered unsuccessful. The observers believe that the talks might relate to a new gas supply contract since the existing contract between Lietuvos Dujos (Lithuanian Gas) and the Russian gas concern will expire at the end of 2015.

According to Masiulis, the authorities have to complete talks with Gazprom first. Then the country would know the volumes, which it would acquire from Russia and which it would deliver through the terminal.

“It’s too early. We have to consider the results of negotiations and come up with a certain mix of contracts,” the minister said.
