According to information available to BNS, Angelis Dzhambazkis of Bulgaria, a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists gorup, has drafted a resolution that proposes lifting Paksas’ immunity.

The committee’s decision will later have to be endorsed by the EP plenary.

Lithuanian prosecutors turned to the European Parliament over Paksas’ immunity in spring of 2016 in an effort to bring peddling influence suspicions against him.

The law-enforcement suspect that Gedvydas Vainauskas, the head of the Lietuvos Rytas media group, had a deal with Paksas that the latter would influence construction inspectors for a bribe of nearly 10,000 euros to sanction the use of a new Norfa supermarket in Prienai.

Both Paksas and Vainauskas deny any accusations, dismissing the trial as politicized.
