“We can regard this as financial support. This is certainly a political impetus to move in this direction. It is not stated, but there is a general understanding that such things as synchronization and technical disconnection from the Smolensk ring cannot be done without EU support and without an appropriate instrument,” Raimundas Karoblis told BNS by telephone from Brussels.
The ambassador said that Thursday’s decision has reinforced a political position regarding such financing. It is also important that the summit’s conclusions mention the establishment of a high-level working group, he said.
In the conclusions adopted on Thursday, EU leaders call for accelerating electricity and gas infrastructure projects, including interconnections with the Baltic countries.
Feasibility studies are underway into whether a new nuclear power station is needed for the synchronization with the Continental European grid. The Lithuanian government says that the synchronization will definitely require a second power interconnection with Poland.
