“Nobody is really suggesting that and we did not speak about possible softening of those sanctions,” the minister told BNS on Monday night by phone from Luxembourg.

The existing EU sanctions apply to Russia’s high-ranking officials, oil and defence industries and banks. The West imposed sanctions on Russia after its annexation of the Ukrainian region of Crimea and Russia’s support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

According to Linkevičius, EU ministers also agreed not to recognize the results of the November elections being organized by separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk.
