European Commission checks progress in Lithuanian N-plant decommissioning

DELFI / Šarūnas Mažeika

Gerassimos Thomas, DG Energy Deputy Director-General, and Maurizio Boella, head of DG Energy Unit for Nuclear Energy Technology, Nuclear Waste and Decommissioning, visited the interim spent nuclear fuel storage facility, known as B1, and the solid radioactive waste storage complex, known as B2/3/4, as well as checked other projects, the INPP said in a press release.

The Ignalina plant, which was the first in the world to close Soviet-built RBMK-type reactors that are considered unsafe by the West, is to be fully decommissioned by 2038. Started in 2004, the closure process is estimated to cost around 2.6 billion euros in total.

Lithuania will receive 450.8 million euros in EU funds for the decommissioning of the facility in 2014 through 2020.
