“It is a disconcerting fact that the World Health Organization (WHO) puts Lithuania in the red zone in terms of how much patients have to pay for services,” Požėla told Žinių Radijas. “There should not be additional payments – we know for what services healthcare institutions are charging extra. There’s often some abuse on their part.”
He added that Lithuania should restructure its healthcare system to address the issue and make better use of the available funds.
Still, he adds, global trends are such that healthcare services will only grow more expensive in the future.
Požėla, who assumed the post this month, says that under his leadership the Ministry of Healthcare will pay more attention to mental health and projects promoting healthy lifestyle.
