Heated debate on conscription expected in Lithuanian parliament

“From what I hear from some MPs, the discussion is probably going to be very heated,” he said on the radio Žinių Radijas on Thursday morning.

According to Butkevičius, the main job of the Government was to implement the State Defence Council‘s decision on the reintroduction of compulsory military service as soon as possible.

As reported, on Wednesday the Lithuanian Government approved the idea to reintroduce conscription and the law on the principles of the structure of the Armed Forces in 2015 will be submitted to the Seimas, parliament. The plan is to draft 3,000-3,500 young men this year for compulsory military service.
