“I signed a decree today on the strictest penalty for the chief of the Kaunas Remand Prison, Kviatkauskas. This means dismissal from service,” Vainiūtė told journalists at the Defence Ministry.
In her words, Živilė Mikėnaitė would have also been dismissed from the top post at the Prisons Department, however, she resigned a few weeks ago.
“Mikėnaitė and Kviatkauskas did not conduct their duties in due and competent manner,” said the justice minister.
In Vainiutė’s words, the violations have to do with use of money, public procurement and poor management: “In the commission’s opinion, the state suffered major property damage, which we hope will be investigated in criminal proceeding.”
The Public Procurement Service has ordered a detailed check of economic and financial operations, as well as an independent audit of the Kaunas Remand Prison due to systematic and continued violations established at the institution.
The checks were conducted at the Kaunas Remand Prison and the Prisons Department after receiving data from the Special Investigation Service, which initially received a tip-off from the prison’s accounting chief Rasa Kazėnienė.
Prosecutors are currently conducting an investigation into misconduct at the Kaunas Remand Prison.
