“Important tasks relating to search for new markets are on the next year’s agenda. I think it’s very important for us, since Lithuania is a small and open export-oriented economy. Also, the priorities include fight against shadow economy. We have already started rolling out a smart tax administration system, which will both encourage tax payment and help reduce costs,” Algirdas Butkevičius told the LRT Radio on Tuesday.

Moreover, the country would next year continue implementing energy projects, including electricity interconnections with Sweden and Poland and the gas pipeline between Klaipėda LNG terminal and Kuršėnai.

“The gas pipeline interconnection between Klaipėda and Kuršėnai will also be completed. This will let us fully meet our gas demand through the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Klaipėda. The existing gas infrastructure is still insufficient to supply gas to the entire country if supply from the East [Russia] were to be cut off,” he said.

According to Butkevičius, the government next year will launch a programme of innovation in order to encourage the adoption of latest technologies. Moreover, the authorities will also work to get expatriates return to the country.
