“When a journalist dies, especially one who writes on sensitive issues, it always causes concern. We are all shocked by this event and hope that it will be diligently, transparently and effectively investigated,” he told BNS on Wednesday.

Linkevičius said that Lithuania had made efforts to establish contact with Sheremet and invited him to a forum in Vilnius.

The minister said that the journalist could significantly contribute to efforts to counter Russian propaganda.

“I think he was important for the entire democratic world, the Russian-language media in the region,” he said.

Sheremet was killed when the car he was driving exploded in the centre of Kiev on Wednesday. Ukrainian prosecutors say that the blast was caused by an explosive device.
