One of the organizers of the picket action, activist Gabija Enciutė of the organization Empty Cages, told journalists that the campaign was mainly aimed at bringing to public attention the conditions on the country’s laying hens.
“The chicken is crammed up in cages and I realize that this is something that the European Union allows, however, the big question is why, as the cages look terrible, although inspectors say they are improved, as I do not know what has been improved there, as the chickens have no room there, they cannot spread their wings, they are often injured, have no feathers and are weak,” said Enciute.
In her words, 97 percent of egg hens are held in cages in Lithuania.
Representatives of the food watchdog aimed to incite the protesters for a meeting, pledging to look into the claims earlier received from the activists.
