Lithuania could become EU entry point for migrants – new interior minister

“Following the entry into force of the readmission agreement between the European Union and Turkey, (migrant) flows may turn via the Black Sea, Ukraine to Poland and via Russia to the Baltic countries,” Tomas Žilinskas told reporters on Thursday.

“We have to be ready and I will definitely discuss it with the head of the State Border Guard Service, General Renatas Požėla, to make sure that officers are properly trained,” he added.

Požėla and President Dalia Grybauskaitė have also said that Lithuania may become a transit country for illegal migrants heading to Western or Northern Europe.

Žilinskas has also underlined the need to cooperate with the Lithuanian military to ward off potential migrant flows.
