Around 5,000 ID cards with outdated e-signatures devices are being recalled, the Ministry of the Interior said. The persons are actively using the e-signature and make 0.8 percent of the ID cards issued in that period.
The existing problem has no impact on the card’s security, the ministry underlined, and people who do not use the e-signature do not need to replace them.
“Personal documents are issued for ten years, and such a period is very long for electronic or computer systems in the century of technological progress. No wonder that some technologies need to be replaced with new ones,” Minister of the Interior Eimutis Misiūnas said.
He noted, however, there’s been “not a single case” since 2009 when the authenticity of an e-signature caused any doubt, therefore, the vulnerability is “more theoretical”.
According to Misiūnas, the government will consider issuing ID cards, for example, every five years due to fast technological changes.
