Lithuanian MP proposes to limit mayoral terms

The existing Law on Local Self-Government does not provide for any limits to terms of office for mayors.

“Only two institutions – the president and the head of a municipality – are officials directly elected by people, they are granted certain powers to act and exercise more rights. Officials of these two institutions, directly elected by people, must have limited term lengths. This would open up more opportunities for democratic development and local governments would see more new leaders,” says MP Juknevičienė.

In Lithuania, members of local councils are elected for a fixed term of four years.
