The campaign Everyone is a Pedestrian is scheduled for January and February.
Vytautas Grašys, chief of the Lithuanian Traffic Police Force, told journalists on Tuesday that pedestrians would be fined 20-40 euros, a reflector and a candle for walking without reflectors at night. Candles will also be given to drivers who do not give way to pedestrians, furthermore, they may be banned from driving. The police hopes the measures will raise awareness and encourage traffic participants to be more responsible.
“Candles are intended to make people think about their irresponsible conduct on roads. We should know that health and lives are the biggest fines. The candles will make them think more about being responsible. We expect them to take the candles home and share their experiences they had when committing the offense,” said Grašys.
A total of 192 people died in car accidents last year, with the number unchanged from 2016.
