Replacement of the jail term with a different form of punishment was requested by the state prosecutor, the Panevėžys court said.
Gailiūnas was charged with committing the criminal deeds in 1951 while serving in the State Security Ministry’s Šiauliai branch.
According to case evidence, Gailiūnas was involved in the deportation of a 53-year-old female with her two daughters, 23 and 26, from the current territory of the Biržai district to Siberia in early October of 1951.
Based on archival documents, the court found that the man’s role in the deportation process was not random or insignificant but, instead, active and very important.
Gailiūnas pleaded not guilty, saying his tasks included monitoring of agricultural operations of collective farms. However, experts found that he had filled out interrogation minutes and registered the females in the lists of families planned for deportations. The females were later deported to the Tomsk region in Siberia by train.
