26-year-old Ramūnas Navardauskas, who also won a stage of the Giro d’Italia last year, benefited from a huge crash in the peloton in order to escape to victory on the 19th stage which started in Maubourguet and finished in Bergerac in southwest France. The stage was 208.5 kilometres (129.5 mile) in length. The Lithuanian, who is riding for “Garmin” team, made his attack 13 kilometers from the end, during a short fourth category climb, and managed to keep his advantage in the front to secure victory under heavy rain.

German rider John Degenkolb finished in second place seven seconds back from the Lithuanian while two-time stage winner, Norwegian Alexander Kristoff took third place.

“I gave it all. My teammates worked really hard for me,” said Navardauskas to AP and added: “I took a risk — you have to try — and it worked.”
