Michnik to Lithuania: Poland always was, is and will be with you

On Monday evening, he took part in a ceremony of lighting commemorative bonfires next to the Lithuanian National Radio and Television building to commemorate the events of 13 January 1991.

24 years ago, in the wake of the bloody 13 January events, Michnik said the same words at the Lithuanian Seimas on behalf of entire Poland. He and many other Polish intellectuals became active supporters of Lithuania in the public sphere and always talked against setting Lithuanians and Polish against each other.

On Tuesday, Michnik will be awarded with the Freedom Prize 2014 at the Seimas of Lithuania.

Over 1,000 unarmed Lithuanian civilians were injured and 14 were killed during an attempt by the Soviet army and Special Forces to take over the Vilnius TV Tower on 13 January 1991.
