Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said he expected the appointment of Theresa May as British prime minister will bring more clarity to markets and to future talks on the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union.
“The United Kingdom is an important security and economic partner of Lithuania. We are ready to work with the country’s new prime minister,” Grybauskaite said.
“We expect that May’s appointment as head of government will provide more clarity both to the financial markets and to future negotiations on the relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union,” she said.
“It is also very important to ensure that incitement to hatred against people of other nationalities is stopped in the United Kingdom,” she added.
May took over as UK prime minister from David Cameron on Wednesday, who resigned after Britain’s vote to leave the EU. About 200,000 Lithuanians live in the UK.
In a surprise move, the new British prime minister appointed Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary. Johnson was a leader of the Leave campaign bu had withdrawn from the Conservative Party leadership race and his political future had seemed uncertain.
